Moving Tales is one such publisher. It recently released a book as an iPad app, called The Pedlar Lady of Gushing Cross. Moving Tales, as the name implies, is a producer of animated books. It’s a mix of movies and books, but does it work?Moving Tales aims to “bring stories to life,” through multimedia features such as 3D animation, music, voice overs, sound effects, alternate views and animation of text “using the iPad’s accelerometer.”The company also makes use of features native to a tablet-like device, such as page swipe or tap for page turning and what it describes as “extras to ensure no two viewings [are] alike.”The Pedlar Lady is a book about “the journey of a poor pedlar woman who, guided by the shifting line between the real and the unreal, discovers a surprising and wonderful treasure.” It costs $4.99 in the App Store. The words are also present of course, allowing you to read the text sans sound if you prefer.Novelty, or The Future of eBooks?The overall effect of The Pedlar is akin to a graphic novel, in that the animation is a core part of the experience. With traditional works of fiction, the reader uses her imagination to bring the text to ‘life.’ And that’s much of the fun, as anyone who has seen a movie version of a novel before reading the novel will attest. If you see the movie first, when you read the book you then have a set picture in your mind about what the characters look and act like. Whereas if you read the book first, you fill in those details in your own mind – even adding bits of yourself or people you know to the fleshed out characters in your head.Reading this iPad book took some of that internal magic away from me, but arguably added enough magic of its own to compensate. So is this the future of eBooks? My answer is that it’s one future. There are certain works of fiction that would lend themselves well to animation and sound effects: childrens books, poetry books where the poet wants to augment their words with the help of animation, books with strong imagery where animation would enhance the experience (the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, for example).Many other books will be best left to the reader’s visual imagination, or are simply too wordy or complex to convert into an animated story.This form of eBook also is very insular, in that it has no social features and no links to external Web content. This perhaps says more about what Apple allows an iPad application to easily do. Still, it’s worth noting that eBooks are capable of a much more expansive experience than what Moving Tales presents.The Pedlar Lady is an impressive eBook though, visually stunning and stylishly delivered. Ads would send users to other areas of the social network. No one would ever leave. So it comes as no surprise that Facebook’s latest ad strategy focuses on subtle ways to keep users in the network. In the second quarter of 2011, Facebook’s advertising department offered an interesting incentive to advertisers: If your ad kept people on Facebook, it would cost you 29% less than an ad that sent users out to another website. For the fourth quarter of 2011, Facebook offered the same deal and pushed the number up to 45% off. Given that Facebook does as much as possible to keep you on the site, will it eventually become your one true social network?According to a the TBG report, some brands are responding to the lowered ad costs by building a presence within Facebook. Boston-based CraveLabs, whose tagline is “rethinking local advertising,” focuses on getting customers to a business’ Facebook page. “Why make your customers that find you on Facebook have to search for your website to find out what your best dishes are?” says CraveLabs, next to an example of why users should visit a restaurant’s Facebook page instead of the actual website. A monster dashboardIf you aren’t an Excel expert, become one. My master spreadsheet has 40 different tabs in it. Get to know your dashboard reporting tool, whether you use Salesforce or a CRM or an e-commerce tool. Be the expert in pulling the essential data. It might take you 25 minutes to write your story but four days to tweak it.The power of knowing your numbers is important, especially in larger organizations. I learned this the day my boss asked me for some numbers that I didn’t have at my fingertips. He said something I never forgot:“If you don’t know these numbers, who does? Everybody has them. Show what you learned from your failure and how you avoided repeating it. For me, it was a $10,000 campaign with a new ad tech company. It failed miserably, but I stopped the campaign before I spent all the company’s money. Ten men received a single intravenous infusion of a harmless virus ferrying a gene for factor IX, a blood-clotting protein missing in people with hemophilia B. Up to 18 months later, the men’s livers are making, on average, 34% the normal level of factor IX. That’s enough that nine of the 10 patients have had no bleeding episodes, researchers report today in The New England Journal of Medicine. What’s more, eight of the 10 no longer need factor IX injections every few days. Previous gene therapy trials for hemophilia B didn’t go well, either because patients’ immune systems destroyed the modified cells or the cells didn’t make enough factor IX. In the new trial, sponsored by Spark Therapeutics and Pfizer, researchers gave the patients’ liver cells the gene for an unusually potent version of the factor IX protein. That allowed the team to lower the vector dose, minimizing immune responses. Two patients had elevated liver enzymes in reaction to the vector, but those levels came down after they received steroids.
