first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Once you have the slider set, you can either view the page or click “get the RSS feed” to add the customized feed to your preferred feed reader. It’s a lot easier than using Yahoo Pipes, that’s for sure!A Couple of SuggestionsOur only complaint about this nifty little web app is that it doesn’t let you choose which section the stories come from (Politics, Technology, Science, Gaming, etc.). Instead, it looks at the entire Digg website. We would also love to filter for images and videos, too. Perhaps in some future version, we hope? At any rate, this is one of those little tools that can end up making your life a little less info-overloaded. And for that, we thank you, Mr. Alex Rabarts. (P.S. Can you build a generic version of this that lets you enter in any URL and then filter by PostRank? That would be amazing!)Alex also created a nice visualization of Digg, Reddit, Delicious, Hacker News, and Yahoo Buzz that’s worth a look. Check it out at oursignal.com. Related Posts If you like to follow the hottest news at Digg.com and use the Digg RSS feed to do so, you’ve probably been a little overwhelmed by the number of stories it pumps out. Now there’s a simple web app that lets you customize the Digg RSS feed by the minimum number of diggs a story has received. You can then view the stories on the disstill web site or you can subscribe to your new, filtered feed. Sometimes it’s little things like this that really make our day. It’s So Easy! There’s really not much to the disstill web application, but that’s okay with us. This is definitely an example of how the simplest web apps can be the most useful in the end. The only thing on the disstill web page is a little slider bar that lets you filter Digg.com stories based on a minimum number of diggs. You just drag the slider to adjust the number of diggs that stories need to have in order to be included in the RSS feed. The low end of the slider is set to 100 diggs and the high end is 5000. Obviously, the higher you go, the more filtered the feed becomes and the more likely you’re only going to see the really, really hot stories. After finding out that DICK’S had sold the Parkland shooter a shotgun, CEO Edward Stack decided last year the company would no longer sell firearm to anyone under 21. DICK’S announced it would destroy its inventory of weapons, rather than allow them to be sold by another retailer.Since then, about $5 million of the chain’s gun inventory has been turned into scrap metal, Stack said in an interview with CBS. “All this about, you know, how we were anti-Second Amendment, you know, ‘we don’t believe in the Constitution,’ and none of that could be further from the truth,” he said in the interview. “We just didn’t want to sell the assault-style weapons that could inflict that kind of damage.”Stack is a hunter and gun owner who believes strongly in the Second Amendment. The company, which his father started as a fish-and-tackle shop in 1948, has sold guns since long before Stack started working there in 1977. But the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, on February 14, 2018, changed that. first_imgAmazon announced this morning that it now has 100,000 movies and television shows available to purchase or rent through its video-on-demand service. Of those, 9,000 are available to stream at no extra charge through its Amazon Prime membership program. Amazon has been busy in recent months, cutting licensing deals with networks and studios, including CBS and NBC Universal, to bolster its streaming content and bring its library up to par with its main competitors, Hulu and Netflix. There are subtle differences between the content libraries of each of the major movie streaming and download services. Hulu (and Hulu Plus) focuses primarily on recent TV shows (such as the most recent seasons of current shows and day-after viewing) though it does have a decent long tail of older shows and movies. Netflix is the prime destination for movies but one of its main strengths is as a library of older content that people still want to watch (with newer content still a problem it needs to work out with the studios and networks). Amazon fits in the middle.Netflix does not make their total number of offerings readily available through its press website. It says two million titles are added to user queues on a daily basis but does not specify if those are DVDs available by mail or via instant streaming. We have contacted Netflix for those specific numbers and will update if the company responds. As of the second quarter this year, Hulu Plus has 28,000 full episodes available for streaming 1,450 movies. It also has 25,000 clips available of shows. Overall, Hulu has near 15,000 hours of content available. One area where Amazon has the advantage over both Hulu and Netflix is the ability to bring newer titles to users. For instance, popular movies such as The Social Network are not available via Hulu or Netflix but can be purchased for download by Amazon for $14.99. As such, its library of newer movies is substantially greater than either Hulu or Netflix, though a hindrance to consumers who want to pay a subscription for streaming titles without having to individually purchase or rent titles. The Social Network is available through Netflix’s DVD by mail service as are almost any title that can be found through Amazon VOD.While 100,000 titles is a good benchmark for Amazon’s VOD service, it is a bit misleading. If you take into account Netflix’s entire library, including DVDs, it still outclasses all comers in the space. Amazon Prime falls well behind Hulu and Netflix with its subscription streaming service with only 9,000 titles, many of which do not fall into the category of new releases. dan rowinski Related Posts Tags:#Amazon#Internet TV#web A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…last_img read more

first_imgBlue Line Contractors Ltd. is a Toronto-area general contractor specializing in commercial and residential renovations that require expertise in structural modifications or complex building changes.Blue Line’s president, Silvio Santos, didn’t have the budget to hire an IT expert. But he knew the way they worked needed an overhaul, as he “would be on the phone from 6 to 10 or 11 every night organizing crews, organizing clients, and scheduling meetings.”The biggest issue for Blue Line was that their old system didn’t support remote access. That meant the team couldn’t collaborate seamlessly between the office and the site. It meant scheduling had to happen over the phone in the evening. And it meant Santos couldn’t take time off. “I used to go 24/7,” Santos says, “And I just don’t have that in me anymore.” Big Changes on a Small BudgetFor Santos, the only choice for the hardware refresh was Intel: “They have the reputation and have been around a long time. I’ve never had issues with Intel processors so I always stick with Intel.”Santos replaced his six-year-old PC fleet with a Lenovo ThinkServer, powered by an Intel Xeon processor E3-1225 v3. Site supervisors received new laptops featuring the Intel Core i5 processor family. All of the hardware was chosen carefully so the team could communicate changes and deal with issues on-the-fly. Schedule or design changes that once threw a wrench in the whole project and considerably slowed down the workday were suddenly no big deal.Santos says that with a new network infrastructure in place, Blue Line has also improved administration with more accurate payroll, and now has the capacity to email invoices and track expenses in real time. He believes these new tools will also help him attract new staff because he can offer more flexible work options. That flexibility extends to Santos himself, too: “I can now take a week off without feeling stressed. It’s a lot easier because I can be in communication and help to address issues quickly.” The New NormalThe day-to-day operations at Blue Line now look completely different. These days, Santos can put a schedule together any time of day and send it out. “If there’s a conflict, I know right away and can modify plans in real time so we don’t have downtime if someone doesn’t show up when they were expected,” he says. Before the refresh, Santos would travel back and forth to client locations to pick up and drop off drawings to quote projects. Today, drawings are emailed to Santos who accesses CAD drawings on his workstation powered by the Intel Xeon processor E5-1630 v3. According to him, “this has been one of the biggest benefits of the new technology.”Reviewing and quoting on large projects used to take two to three weeks to get drawings in for revisions and verification. Add another two weeks for production and six weeks later, they’d be starting installation.“Now, we can get shop drawings for urgent jobs in a day or two, if not same day,” says Santos. “The whole process has streamlined from a month to a day.”Santos estimates his business has grown 30 percent since they started making the investment in new technologies, and he’s projecting a further 30 to 40 percent increase in sales this year — all thanks to the right hardware.Learn more about Blue Line’s refresh process and how the right hardware upgrades could boost your small business. And I’m sorry, but it is not as simple as saying that with France last summer he was surrounded by class acts with who it was easy to play – Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, N’Golo Kante, Blaise Matuidi and Raphael Varane, etc.”It doesn’t matter who you are playing with. I saw Paul Pogba chasing back, heading balls out of his own penalty area, tackling, covering, grafting, when France were under real pressure protecting a 1-0 against Belgium in the World Cup semi-final.”That was nothing to do with the quality of his team-mates.”It was Pogba wanting to be the best player and team-mate he could be, to be a winner, not the player of the last two months at Manchester United.”Pogba is not alone in not producing his best.
