Kolkata: The city has witnessed two separate cases of organ transplants in which hearts were flown in to the city and later transported to hospitals through Green Corridors in the past 24 hours.The first incident took place on late Sunday night when a heart was retrieved from a 24-year-old youth, who was declared brain dead at a private hospital in Andhra Pradesh, after meeting with a road accident.The heart was flown in the city and later transported to a private hospital on EM Bypass through a Green Corridor jointly set up by Kolkata and Bidhannagar police. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeIt took around 16 minutes to cover a distance of 18 km distance — from the airport to a hospital on late Sunday night.The doctors started the operation at around 12.20 am and the organ was transplanted on a Salt Lake based businessman, Samiran Dutta (52), who had been suffering from heart-related ailments for a long time. The operation lasted for two hours.One Surjya Narayan Ramur (24) was admitted to a private hospital in Andhra Pradesh after he met with a road accident. He was declared brain dead following which his family members agreed to donate his heart. This has become possible due to prompt action taken by the state Health department in giving necessary clearance.Another incident of Green corridor occurred in the city on Monday evening when another heart, retrieved from a patient in Patna, was flown in to the cityat around 5.13 pm. A green corridor jointly facilitated by Kolkata and Bidhannagar Police ensured that the donated heart reached a private hospital from the airport in less than half an hour.It was a challenge for the police to transport the organ to the hospital in the minimum possible time through VIP Road as there is heavy traffic in the area nowadays. The doctors at the hospital transplanted the heart on a 27-year-old woman from Howrah.It may be mentioned that the State government’s continuous efforts to promote organ donations has once again brought fruitful results. The incidents of organ donation have increased in the state due to proactive efforts by the state Health department which has been working closely with the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation.
