Text-based games aren’t as prominent as they used to be back during the early days of PC gaming. Despite being virtually extinct (at least to mainstream gaming audiences), these games do still exist today. One such title is Subsurface Circular. Created by Bithell games (the same developer and publisher behind Thomas Was Alone and Volume), Subsurface Circular was released this past August on Steam. The game contains everything players love about text-based adventures but in a thoroughly modern package. Subsurface Circular was a hit on PC, and it is now available for iPad through the App Store.“Subsurface Circular puts players into the role of a detective stationed on the Subsurface Circular who investigates a series of disappearances among the city’s robotic working class,” reads today’s press release. “Players collect words and phrases, then use them in dialogue puzzles to uncover the world’s secrets and determine its future.”“Traditional media are great at telling short stories, but in games we tend to want to hand the player epics,” said Mike Bithell, founder of Bithell Games. “We set out to create a game that delivers a satisfying experience in one sitting, and the response from players has been incredible.”Subsurface Circular is the first title in a series of “Bithell Shorts.” It is inspired by classic adventure games but has the dialogue systems of modern titles. Bithell Games’ goal with Subsurface Circular was to create a single-session story that “respects players’ time and intelligence.” Besides the game itself, players can enjoy an art gallery where they can check out the work put into the game. There is even an unlockable “BithellBot” that acts as an interactive take on a developer’s commentary.Subsurface Circular is now available for $4.99 on the App Store. The game is designed for iPad running iOS 11 or later.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
