The cane cutter who went berserk and severed one of the hands of the mother of his three children was arraigned on Wednesday for attempted murder when he made his appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on the East Coast of Demerara.Warren Dennis was accused of maliciously wounding Alana Hazel causing her serious bodily harm on April 23 at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.Remanded: Warren DennisIt was reported that on the day in question, the woman went to the man’s home and an argument ensued. It was during the argument that he picked up a cutlass and carried out the brutal attack.In a bid to escape from the man, the injured woman jumped through a window and ended up in a nearby trench. As persons rushed to her assistance, the suspect was seen running into the nearby cane field with the cutlass in his hands.She was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was admitted as a patient in serious condition. The suspect and the Police Constable attached to the Mess Hall had been separated for quite some time owing to his abusive behaviour.Hazel reportedly moved on with her life, but would frequent the man’s house, claiming that she would visit her eldest son, who resided with the suspect.Dennis was remanded to prison, and the matter was scheduled to be called again on May 8.
